The cylinder and has to have a bottom and it has to have a metal coating. 2. The antenna itself has to go through the side perpendicular to the length of the cylinder (and thus be parallel to the bottom of the cylinder) and the distance between the antenna and the bottom of the cylinder is CRITICAL, and is calculated based on the frequency of the signal. The way you've built it... the signal out of the small accesspoint dipole antenna is like a doughnut around the axis defined by the lenght of the antenna which is blocked by the cylinder in it's entirety and turned into... a big mess.
