What is DNS

Files under Internet | Posted by calvyn

DNS, so-called Domain Name Server!

Most of the IT personnel know how to configure the Domain Name Server or DNS IP during manual configure on IP address, but does them really know how it works?

Without this DNS address, normally the PC can’t access to internet… Is it the gateway to access Internet??? Nope… You have already set the gateway at above the DNS.

Gateway normally is the modem router or server IP address… Not related to DNS

What is DNS (What is Domain Name Server)?
DNS is a server which store a list of IP address and Domain, lets say

www.iCalvyn.com = 210.48.145.25

www.Cari.com.my = 202.71.108.28

www.LowYat.net = 202.190.197.144

When you type an URL in your Internet browser (Internet Exporer or Mozilla FireFox), 1st thing, your computer will send the URL to the DNS server, find the URL and see is which IP, then only goes to the website with that IP

FYI, every computer device communicate thought IP address, IP address just like out house address.

As an easy example, DNS is just like a directory, if you wanna to find Mr.David Lee Tat Wei’s house, you will not direct arrive, you need to seek the directory, match the name and then found the home address. For example:

Name = Domain Name

Home Address = IP address

As picture below, you are visitor, when you type an URL, your Internet browser will 1st check with your DNS server, found the address, send back to your computer, then your computer only access that IP Address.

    My comp’s IT Support teams is in Perak, with the PCAnyway software connected & IP Add provided, they can access to the PC at my side (Miri) to do maintanance job. I wonder if hacking someone PC also thru this IP Add? then y to expose our IP add to others?

    Amei79: It’s common of tech support using remote desktop software to access another computer. I use it to access my VPS located in Washington, US. Every computer has their own IP, that will always remain transparent. Of course there are security measure that needs to be followed to prevent unauthorized access such as password, firewall etc etc

    not really also, if u have ur own dns set on ur router/modem u can set ur dns to that as well …it will forward dns request to ur modem/router and that will be forwarded to the dns addresses set onto ur modem …

    some other good dns which u left out …

    Global DNS
    4.2.2.2 / 4.2.2.3

    Oopen DNS
    208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220

    bet u didnt know that there is a Global DNS rite …

    u can use a primary from globa or open, and vice versa for ur alternate dns …

    Now I understand.
    graphically, this thing make me easy to understand.

    thank for the nice graphics.

    someday i hope u could graphically help me how to simulate network traffic via satellite simulation especially Low Earth Orbittal satellites.

    for. e.g. Teledesic, and Iridium.

    maybe Globalstar too..
